A Healthy Start: Dental & Medical Screenings for New Mercy Students

From April to May 2026, the Alpha Mercy Health & Wellness Centre conducted annual dental and medical screenings with newly registered students from Jessie Ripoll Primary School and Alpha Primary School. At each screening, students had their vitals checked by a registered nurse. This included the checking of each child’s blood pressure, vision, height, weight, pulse, temperature and respiratory rate.

Based on the needs presented, the dental procedures on offer included oral exams, cleaning, prophylaxis, sealants, tooth restorations, intraoral radiographs, fluoride application and more. Overall, 158 Alpha Primary students and 117 Jessie Ripoll Primary students had their medical and dental needs attended to. These students were either entering primary school for the first time (i.e. incoming first graders) or were new students who are transfers from other primary schools. The screenings were aided by the purchase of a new dental chair which helps to facilitate the wide range of procedures which can be offered.
