Despite the start of summer break, Mercy school campuses were still abuzz with activity throughout the month of July due to students’ participation in various summer schools.

At Jessie Ripoll Primary school, children were treated to three weeks of fun, challenging activities like Coding/AI class, arts & crafts, physical education, swimming and music lessons. Students also went to the cinema for a special movie day. At Alpha Primary, students enjoyed the fresh air by going swimming in the Alpha Academy pool and explored Kingston by taking field trips to the zoo, the new Jamaica Music Museum (which features an exhibit highlighting the great musicians who were trained at Alpha Boys’ School), and the Institute of Jamaica (where they learned about Jamaica’s indigenous people).

Alpha Academy and Mt. St. Joseph (MSJ) Prep School gave their students a range of academic and creative activities. These included Mathematics and English classes, dancing and arts & crafts. Sports included swimming for the high schoolers as well as football and other outdoor games at the prep school. MSJ Prep also involved students in the culinary arts and an exciting treasure hunt. Furthermore, with the nation’s ever-increasing focus on STEM education, robotics and information technology were taught at Alpha Academy.

Each summer school plays an important part in increasing students’ readiness for the upcoming school year. They serve as places where friendships are formed, new skills and interests are unlocked, and a greater sense of school spirit is developed. We know that next year’s round of summer schools will be just as enriching as this one.
