Spelling like Champs: Jessie Ripoll Spelling Bee Competition

On June 21, Jessie Ripoll Primary hosted its annual In House Spelling Bee Competition in the Peter Claver Library on campus. The competition, which was sponsored by Kingston Bookshop, Grace Kennedy, Jambisco and more, saw 30 students (15 from lower school and upper school respectively) battle it out for the title of Spelling Bee Champion. The day began with a prayer led by one of the judges, Mrs. Palmer-Thomas, followed by an official welcome by the school’s new vice principal, Mrs. Moodie-Benbow.

What followed were hours of intense competition as students faced a panel of four judges and attempted to spell each word given to them within a one-minute period respectively. By the end of the competition, four students emerged victorious and were awarded trophies signifying their achievements as Champion Boy and Champion Girl for both upper and lower school. Other students also received certificates attesting to their hard work. The school looks forward to staging another Spelling Bee next year and is confident that in the meantime, students will continue to grow in their vocabulary skills and overall confidence.
